Introduction of The Organisation
Background
Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) is a public university located in Melaka, Malaysia. UTeM offers a wide range of academic programmes, including diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. The existing network infrastructure on UTeM's Main Campus includes the Computer Centre and ten subnetworks: FTMK, FKE, FKEKK, FKM, FKP, Post Graduate Centre, Canselory Office, Registrar Office, Library, and Sports Centre. The network architecture currently consists of a combination of wired and wireless connectivity, with network equipment placed across campus to give network access to faculty, staff, and students.
Business Operations
The business operations for UTeM's infrastructure network include numerous main areas that serve the academic and administrative responsibilities of the university. Among these operations are:
Academic Activities: The network infrastructure plays an essential role in supporting UTeM's academic activities. It connects to and offers access to online learning platforms such as U-Learn and a digital library which is called Laman Hikmah. Students and faculty members can use the network to interact, share knowledge, and participate in distance learning programmes through the online learning platform.
Administrative Functions: The network infrastructure performs UTeM's administrative functions, such as the Registrar's Office and Library. It enables secure access to student records, administrative databases, and communication systems, permitting more efficient administration of student enrolment, course registration, academic records, and other operations.
Campus Management: The network infrastructure supports handling the operations of UTeM's campus facilities, such as the Sports Centre and Registrar. It connects property management systems, access control systems, security cameras, and other campus security measures. The network architecture ensures smooth communication between campus management departments and allows for efficient monitoring and control of campus resources.
The Network Needs of The Organisation
Since the computer network users in UTeM have increased rapidly, a redesigned network is needed to support the number of network users. The most important thing for the new network is that network needs to accommodate a large number of users compared to the old network. Since the network users for different subnetworks may be different, the design for each subnetwork may be different from another.
Next, as the technology landscape changes, some of the current designs of the subnetwork may need to be more suitable in the current situation, especially for the subnetwork that has a massive increase of network users. For the subnetwork that has more users, we can make it by separating each of them into different sub-subnetwork that we can manage more easily.
Some of the network websites should be accessible by all users at all subnetworks, such as the UTeM Portal, Ulearn and UTeM Exam Portal. The network design should ensure that certain websites which are very important for UTeM students can be accessed easily in every part of UTeM.
